Arbitration Experience
Dr. Ayodele (“Ayo”) Akenroye, FCIArb is an independent, international commercial arbitrator based in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. In addition to his independent practice as an Arbitrator, he is also an Immigration Judge (Tribunal Member) with the Government of Canada where he adjudicates immigration matters.
Before becoming an Arbitrator and an Immigration Judge, he pursued a career as an advocate and he has represented individuals and corporations in the different areas of law not limited to corporate commerce, ethics and anti-corruption, banking, construction, energy, finance, infrastructure, insurance, mining, solar power plants, telecommunication, transportation, joint ventures, licensing, patents, post-M&A, sales of goods and shareholdings, and criminal litigation (international and domestic).
Ayo brings to the arbitration process a significant wealth of litigation and adjudicatory experience, strong listening and writing skills, a deep understanding of the law and legal principles, and an ability to apply those principles to the facts in a fair and impartial manner. He renders clear, comprehensive, and confidential decisions in a matter of weeks. His ability to master complex facts and transaction documents provides the foundation for effective strategic advice and great results.
Ayo is trained and has practised law in multiple common-law jurisdictions. He holds a Law Degree from Obafemi Awolowo University, Nigeria, a master’s degree in law from the University of Manitoba, Canada and a Doctorate in Public International Law from McGill University, Canada. Having practised in Nigeria before qualifying in Canada in 2013, Ayo understands the practical and cultural differences presented in cross-border disputes.
Ayo takes great interest in the impact of technology in his field. He is currently conducting a multi-year study at the Center for Criminology and Socio-Legal Studies, the University of Toronto on the use of videoconferencing technology in the Canadian Criminal Courts and how this renegotiates the image of a judge in criminal trials. Also, he has trained judges and lawyers on the use of technology to conduct hearings.
Among his many honours and professional designations, Ayo is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb), London, UK. Ayo is active in the arbitration community and currently serves as a Director of the Board of Directors of CIArb Canada Branch and a member of ICC Canada Arbitration Committee and the Toronto Commercial Arbitration Society.
